ANKARA, Türkiye — Türkiye has formally moved to seek an Interpol Red Notice for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of genocide, crimes against humanity, torture, and other offenses linked to Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian aid mission bound for Gaza.
Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that Ankara’s Justice Ministry had requested the Interior Ministry to initiate the Interpol process following arrest warrants issued by an Istanbul court on July 14. The case involves 35 Israeli defendants, including Netanyahu, who are being tried in absentia over the May flotilla operation in international waters.
What is an Interpol Red Notice?
A Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant. Instead, it is a request sent through Interpol asking law enforcement agencies in its 196 member countries to locate and provisionally detain a wanted person pending possible extradition. Interpol reviews such requests before deciding whether they meet its legal standards.
If approved, the notice would significantly complicate Netanyahu’s international travel, though enforcement ultimately depends on the laws of each participating country.
Flotilla raid at the center of the case
The legal action stems from Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in May, when Israeli forces stopped multiple aid vessels attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza.
