PESHAWAR, Pakistan — At least 35 people, including 34 children and a female teacher, were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, on Thursday, October 15, according to Pakistani authorities and local media reports. More than 50 people were reported injured.
The collapse occurred at the Al-Khair Education Centre in Peshawar’s Dir Colony area during morning classes. The victims were mostly children under the age of 13, according to officials.
The roof of an upper floor reportedly collapsed onto classrooms below, causing parts of the three-storey building to give way. Rescue workers, emergency personnel and local residents searched through the debris to locate trapped students and staff.
Rescue teams worked for several hours to recover victims and assist survivors. Hospitals in the city treated the injured, with some reported to be in critical condition. Authorities said the rescue operation recovered those trapped beneath the rubble.
Police arrested the school’s owner as part of the investigation. Officials cited concerns about the building’s structural condition, while the owner reportedly attributed the roof’s weakness to recent rainfall. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
The provincial government formed a committee to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the building failure.
