MANILA, Philippines — October 24, 2026 — Vice President Sara Duterte faces an impeachment charge involving alleged unexplained wealth after House prosecutors submitted documentary evidence to the Senate impeachment court, advancing the proceedings toward the defense stage.

The remaining charge centers on allegations that Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, held assets or received income that prosecutors say were not adequately explained by their declared financial records.

Prosecutors cite ₱817.87 million in alleged unexplained wealth

House prosecutors presented findings by forensic accounting expert Alexander Cabrera, who estimated that Duterte and Carpio had approximately ₱817.87 million in allegedly unexplained assets and income between 2022 and 2025.

According to the prosecution, the assessment drew on financial records, tax documents, corporate filings and Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs). Prosecutors also cited a broader calculation that could reach ₱1.5 billion.

The figures form part of the prosecution’s case and have not been established as a final finding of wrongdoing by the Senate impeachment court.

Duterte has denied wrongdoing, while her defense has disputed the allegations.

Prosecutors submit formal offer of evidence

On October 20, prosecutors filed their formal offer of evidence ahead of the October 23 deadline, according to reports published October 22.

The submission asks the Senate impeachment court to admit documents and testimony supporting the remaining unexplained-wealth charge. The court will determine which evidence may be considered in the proceedings.

The submission marks a procedural step in the case and does not, by itself, establish the truth of the allegations.

Three other impeachment charges withdrawn

The unexplained-wealth allegation remains the sole charge in the current impeachment trial after the withdrawal of three other articles on October 13.

Those withdrawn charges involved the alleged misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and grave threats and related allegations. Prosecutors have indicated that evidence concerning some of these matters may be referred to other government agencies for possible separate proceedings.

The withdrawal of the charges from the impeachment trial does not, by itself, determine whether separate legal action will follow.

Defense expected to present evidence in November

The Senate impeachment trial is scheduled to resume on November 9, 2026, when Duterte’s defense is expected to begin presenting evidence on the remaining charge, subject to procedural rulings by the impeachment court.

The proceedings will determine whether the prosecution has established sufficient grounds for the charge and whether the defense can rebut its allegations.

As of October 24, the reports reviewed do not establish a final conviction or acquittal in the impeachment case. The allegations remain subject to examination by the Senate impeachment court.
