Elon Musk Claims 2.1 Million ‘Non-Citizens’ Received Social Security Numbers in 2024

| Published March 30, 2025

Tech billionaire and government efficiency advocate Elon Musk has claimed that approximately 2.1 million non-citizens were issued Social Security numbers (SSNs) in 2024, a sharp increase from previous years. Speaking at a recent event alongside investor Antonio Gracias, Musk suggested that changes in immigration policies have contributed to this dramatic rise.

According to Musk, the number of non-citizens receiving SSNs grew from 270,000 in 2021 to over two million in 2024, a trend he attributes to lax border policies and administrative processing procedures. Gracias further explained that many migrants, upon entering the U.S. and claiming asylum, were able to receive SSNs without extensive background verification.

However, these claims have been met with pushback. Acting Social Security Commissioner Lee Dudek has refuted similar assertions, arguing that inconsistencies in the agency’s outdated data systems, rather than fraud or policy mismanagement, account for discrepancies in Social Security records. Dudek also emphasized that reports of deceased individuals receiving benefits have been largely exaggerated.

Critics argue that the focus on Social Security issuance to non-citizens detracts from the broader issue of the program’s long-term financial stability. They contend that addressing demographic challenges and funding mechanisms should take precedence over concerns about alleged administrative flaws.

As debates over immigration policies and Social Security continue, lawmakers and policy experts are calling for clearer data transparency and reforms to ensure the integrity of public benefit programs. The controversy underscores the ongoing clash between economic, social, and political interests in shaping the future of America’s welfare systems.
