The IDF instructed Lebanese citizens to flee some 36 miles north of the border
Iran is preparing to ‘imminently’ launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel, according to a senior US administration official, who warned Tuesday of ‘severe consequences’ should it take place.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter, said the US is actively supporting Israeli defensive preparations.
Barak Ravid, an Israeli journalist and political reporter for Axios, claimed the official said Iran is planning to attack ‘in the immediate time frame’.
It comes just hours after the Israeli military warned the residents of more than two dozen Lebanese border communities to immediately evacuate their homes after announcing the start of ground operations against Hezbollah.
Israel Defence Forces spokesman Avichay Adraee told Lebanese citizens to flee north of the Awali River, some 60 kilometres (36 miles) from the border, raising fears that the IDF may intend to send its forces deep into southern Lebanon.
‘You must immediately head north of the Awali River to save yourselves, and leave your houses immediately,’ said the statement.

The White House on Tuesday said the US believes Iran is preparing an imminent ballistic missile attack against Israel.
“The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran,” a senior White House official said in a statement.
The US is prepared to do whatever it can to help Israel intercept anything Iran directs its way, similar to how the US offered its assistance in April, when Iran launched a wave of drones and missiles towards Israel — the vast majority of which were successfully intercepted, a US official said.
The scale of the anticipated Iranian attack this time was not immediately clear.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have ratcheted up significantly in recent weeks as Israel has stepped up its efforts against Hezbollah in Lebanon, an Iran-backed militant group. Israel on Monday launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah.
