Four Civilizations Wrote Down the Same Year. None of Them Knew Why
Video: The Vanished Nations
In 536 the sun over the Mediterranean dimmed and stayed dim for more than a year. Procopius wrote it down in Constantinople. Cassiodorus wrote it down in Italy. Court chroniclers wrote it down in southern China. Irish annalists recorded a failure of bread. Four literate societies, thousands of miles apart, describing the same broken sky in the same year, none of them aware of the others.
Fourteen centuries later, glaciologists pulled a core of ice out of northwest Greenland and found volcanic glass at the layer for 536. Not one chemistry. Three. And the mountains those fingerprints pointed at were not in Italy or Iceland or Indonesia. They stood in western North America, in the Aleutian arc, in the northern British Columbia interior, and in the Mono Basin of eastern California.
This video follows the physical evidence from bristlecone pines in the White Mountains to the sulfate layers in Greenland ice, examines the case honestly including everything wrong with it, and ends where the record actually ends. Not with an answer
