Kyiv/Washington – Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) have released details and video of an ambush carried out inside Russian territory. Separately, the US has approved a potential $2.1bn sale of Patriot interceptors to Ukraine.

The ambush

The 73rd Maritime Center of Ukraine’s SOF said its operators ambushed a vehicle on Russian territory, destroyed it and seized important documents and communications equipment. According to the unit, the operators covertly crossed enemy minefields and moved deep behind enemy lines before the attack. They then spent several days on reconnaissance, identifying potential targets.

The unit said it found drone equipment, radios, weapons, mobile phones, combat orders, movement routes and personnel lists in the vehicle. The operators then continued their mission behind enemy lines. The unit’s account is the only one so far, and Russia has not commented in the reports reviewed. Casualty figures have not been independently verified.

The Patriot sale

The US State Department has cleared a potential sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptors to Ukraine, estimated at $2.1bn. The package includes spare parts and logistics support, with Lockheed Martin as the primary contractor. Canada and European partners are funding the purchase, and the State Department says no American financial resources are involved. Delivery timing has not been disclosed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged allies to speed up deliveries as Russia continues ballistic missile attacks ahead of winter.

Two details to note

  • The two developments were reported the same day. None of the sources reviewed link them.
  • The sale is a State Department approval of a potential sale, not a signed contract.
