KYIV, Ukraine — September 27, 2026 — Russia and Ukraine exchanged another wave of deadly aerial attacks on Saturday, with strikes killing civilians in Ukraine while a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region also caused deaths, according to Ukrainian and Russian regional officials cited by The Associated Press.
Four killed in Russian attacks across Ukraine
According to Ukrainian officials cited by AP, Russian attacks on Saturday killed four people in Ukraine.
Two women were killed after becoming trapped beneath the rubble of a destroyed home in Zaporizhzhia. In the northeastern city of Sumy, another Russian attack killed two people, officials said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks struck residential areas and other locations in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Zelenskyy accused Moscow of escalating its attacks and called on Ukraine’s international partners to respond with stronger measures. His comments were made as Kyiv continues seeking additional international support for air defenses and efforts to pressure Russia economically.
The Kyiv region also suffered a Russian drone attack that caused a warehouse fire in the Boryspil district. Two people were injured, while additional Russian drones struck parts of Kyiv, injuring four people and damaging residential and office buildings, according to local officials.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attack on Kyiv damaged a data center supporting mobile internet services and Starlink satellite communications.
Ukraine strikes Russian industrial targets
Ukraine, meanwhile, continued its campaign of long-range drone attacks inside Russia.
A Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Krasnodar region killed three people and wounded two, according to regional officials. Fires were reported at two industrial sites, and Russian media reported that an oil refinery was among the targets.
The attacks are part of Ukraine’s broader effort to strike Russian energy and industrial infrastructure that Kyiv says supports Moscow’s war effort.
The pattern has become increasingly significant during the prolonged conflict: Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from the air, while Ukraine has sought to take the fight deeper into Russian territory with long-range drones.
The battle in the skies is becoming central to the war
The latest exchange highlights how the conflict has increasingly become a contest involving unmanned aircraft, missiles and attacks on infrastructure far from the front lines.
While ground fighting continues, AP reported that front-line progress has slowed after more than four years of full-scale war. The continued aerial attacks therefore represent one of the most visible ways both sides are attempting to impose costs on the other.
Recent attacks have also demonstrated the vulnerability of civilian areas. Earlier in the week, Russian strikes on Kyiv killed civilians, including a 14-year-old boy, while Ukrainian attacks targeted Russian energy facilities.
The escalation comes despite continuing diplomatic efforts. Zelenskyy recently appealed at the United Nations for countries to increase economic pressure on Russia, while discussions over possible measures to reduce attacks on energy infrastructure and in the Black Sea have continued.
