Bashar al-Assad’s wife Asma given only 50% chance of cancer survival: ‘Asma is dying’

The British wife of ousted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is deathly ill with leukemia — with doctors only giving her a 50% chance of survival, according to a report.

“Asma is dying,” one source recently in direct contact with a family representative told the Telegraph of 49-year-old Asma al-Assad.

The former first lady is being cared for in Moscow — where her husband fled after his regime was toppled earlier this month — where she is being cared for mostly by her father, cardiologist Fawaz Akhras, who is “heartbroken,” the source said.

She is so sick “she can’t be in the same room” with hardly anyone else, the source said.

“She has been 50/50 in the last few weeks,” another source said doctors’ predictions on her chances of survival.

Asma al-Assad previously had breast cancer, which went away after a year of treatment, officials announced in 2019.

The former Syrian government then revealed in May that Asma had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia – a cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.

That also went into remission, until reappearing again recently, the UK paper reported.

“When leukemia comes back, it’s vicious,” one of the paper’s sources said.

Assad, who was born in London, is believed to have flown to the Russian capital before her husband was urged to leave the country he led for nearly 25 years.

Her “heartbroken” father, a cardiologist, has been caring for his daughter over the past six months —  first in the United Arab Emirates and later in Moscow, The Telegraph reported.

The wife of deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is severely ill with leukaemia and has been given a 50-50 chance of survival, media reports say.

Asma al-Assad is being isolated to prevent infection and cannot be in the same room as other people, the Telegraph newspaper also reported.

The al-Assad family fled to Moscow as a lightning rebel offensive swept Syria’s capital Damascus earlier this month.

British-born Asma al-Assad and their children left for Russia ahead of the former president, and she is now reportedly being cared for by her father Fawaz Akhras, a respected Harley Street cardiologist, who is said to be “heartbroken”.

Syria’s presidency announced in May that Asma al-Assad, the then-first lady, had been diagnosed with an acute form of leukaemia, a cancer of the bone marrow and blood.

She had previously been treated for breast cancer, and in 2019 announced she was free of the disease after a year of treatment.
