Bring him home!’ Duterte supporters urge ICC to release ex-president

| Published March 25, 2025

Supporters of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte are calling on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to release him following his recent arrest and detention in the Netherlands. Duterte faces charges related to alleged human rights violations stemming from his controversial “war on drugs” campaign, which led to thousands of deaths during his administration.

Duterte’s arrest, followed by his transfer to ICC custody in Rotterdam, has sparked outrage among his loyal base, the so-called Diehard Duterte Supporters (DDS). Many have flooded social media with calls to “bring him home,” demanding his immediate release. Some have even targeted ICC officials online, prompting warnings from legal experts that such actions could backfire and harm Duterte’s case.

On the other hand, families of victims of the “war on drugs” have expressed renewed hope for justice. Jerica Ann Pico, whose husband was killed during the anti-drug campaign, described Duterte’s arrest as a moment of renewed faith in accountability. “It feels like a rebirth,” she said, echoing the sentiments of many who have long awaited justice for their loved ones.

The Philippine government’s stance on the ICC probe has shifted over the years. While Duterte pulled the country out of the ICC’s founding treaty in 2019, claiming the court had no jurisdiction, recent statements from Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla suggest a more flexible approach. He indicated the possibility of cooperating with the ICC under specific terms, signaling a departure from Duterte’s policy of outright defiance.

As ICC proceedings continue, the Philippines remains deeply divided. While Duterte’s supporters continue to rally for his freedom, victims’ families and human rights advocates are hopeful that this could be a turning point in the pursuit of justice.

The world is closely watching the case, as it raises critical questions about accountability, international law, and the future of human rights in the Philippines.
