Uzbek citizen held by Russia in connection with chemical weapons chief Igor Kirillov’s killing
Ukraine has unveiled a laser weapon capable of downing drones from more than a mile away in a bid to combat Russian aerial attacks.
Colonel Vadym Sukharevsky, the commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, said the laser would be capable of downing aircraft at distances of more than 2km.
“It really works; it really exists,” he said at the Europe Defence Industry conference, adding that efforts are underway to scale up its capabilities.
The announcement comes after the UK announced a cutting-edge ‘Trident’ laser weapon earlier this year. They said at the time they would be sharing its prototypes with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia has detained an Uzbek citizen who investigators believe placed the bomb inside an electric scooter which killed General Igor Kirillov on the instructions of Ukraine’s security service, the Investigative Committee said today.
The senior Russian general was killed yesterday in Moscow and Ukraine claimed responsibility of the attack, calling Kirillov a “legitimate target”.
In response, Russia threatened the Ukrainian leadership with imminent revenge for what it described as a “cowardly and despicable strike”.

According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (VSU), Ukraine has developed a new laser weapon called Trident, which can hit aircraft at altitudes of more than two kilometers.
Vadim Sukharevsky, head of the newly created Unmanned Systems Forces within the VSU, stated that Ukraine has already deployed the Trident laser weapon in real combat operations in 2024.
«I think we can now acknowledge that Ukraine has become the fifth country in the world, if I’m not mistaken, to possess a laser weapon. Currently, we can hit aircraft at altitudes of more than two kilometers. The laser works, and we do have this weapon,» the Interfax-Ukraine media outlet reported, citing Sukharevsky.
He also revealed that the Unmanned Systems Forces plan to scale up the weapon and enhance its capacity. Commenting on the development of combat drones in Ukraine, Sukharevsky added that his division is working on a drone “mother ship” capable of carrying several smaller combat drones.
«We are using so-called drone mother ships, which can carry two smaller FPV drones over 70 kilometers. Acting as a transmitter, it is very effective for long-range strike operations. I think this is a significant achievement,» Sukharevsky said.
In late November, Moscow hit Ukraine with Oreshnik, a missile the Kremlin claimed to be the new design. The rocket is expected to enter mass production under orders from President Vladimir Putin.
