WASHINGTON — A senior White House counterterrorism official says U.S. forces have killed or otherwise “permanently removed” more than 1,600 jihadist fighters from the battlefield, highlighting what the administration describes as an aggressive campaign against terrorist organizations worldwide.
Dr. Sebastian Gorka, the White House deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council, made the claim during an appearance on The Alex Marlow Show, according to a report published Saturday by Breitbart.
“Our brave war fighters have permanently removed 1,666 jihadis from the battlefield,” Gorka said.
The figure represents a significant expansion from earlier public statements about the administration’s counterterrorism operations. In June, Gorka similarly said the Trump administration had killed more than 1,000 jihadists around the world while discussing a U.S. counterterrorism operation in Nigeria.
Gorka Highlights Global Counterterrorism Campaign
Gorka’s remarks point to a counterterrorism strategy that extends beyond a single conflict zone, with U.S. operations targeting jihadist networks and militants in multiple regions.
The administration has emphasized disrupting terrorist organizations before they can threaten Americans or U.S. interests abroad. Gorka has repeatedly portrayed the campaign as part of a broader effort to restore a more aggressive posture against terrorist groups.
The latest figure, however, was presented by Gorka during a media interview and was not accompanied in the Breitbart report by a detailed public breakdown of the 1,666 deaths, including the locations, organizations or individual operations involved.
That distinction is important because casualty figures in counterterrorism operations can encompass fighters killed during individual military actions, intelligence-driven strikes and other U.S. or partner operations.
Nigeria Operation Highlighted Earlier
Gorka’s June comments came after a U.S. counterterrorism operation in Nigeria in which American officials said 199 terrorists had been killed.
According to reporting at the time, Gorka also said the operation produced a major intelligence haul, including electronic material that U.S. officials described as the largest such seizure since the September 11 attacks.
The Nigeria operation illustrated the administration’s broader approach of working with foreign partners while targeting terrorist organizations before they can expand their reach.
Administration Signals Continued Pressure on Terrorist Groups
The new 1,666 figure is likely to become a key talking point for the administration as it seeks to demonstrate the results of its counterterrorism policy.
Rather than focusing solely on territorial campaigns, the strategy emphasizes eliminating terrorist personnel, disrupting networks and gathering intelligence that can be used against remaining militant organizations.
Still, the administration’s figure will require additional public documentation to establish precisely how the total was calculated and which operations are included.
