CEUTA, Spain — A growing dispute has erupted in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta over plans to establish temporary migrant accommodation close to a nursery school, highlighting the intense pressure facing local authorities after the territory experienced an unprecedented migration surge in July.
Spanish authorities are preparing a temporary accommodation site in the Los Rosales area for hundreds of migrants who remain without adequate shelter following the mass arrivals from Morocco. Anadolu Agency reported that tents were being installed as authorities attempted to move people away from streets and improvised camps.
The proposed location has triggered opposition from parents, school staff and residents because of its proximity to the Nuestra Señora de África nursery school. Spanish media reported that the planned migrant camp could be only around 15 to 20 meters from the school, prompting Ceuta authorities to consider relocating children and teachers.
The dispute comes amid a broader humanitarian and logistical crisis. More than 70,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco during the late-July surge, although most subsequently returned to Morocco. The episode overwhelmed local accommodation and social services, leaving thousands still requiring assistance.
