MAGDEBURG/HALLE, Germany — Thousands of demonstrators gathered across the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt on Saturday, September 5, in protests opposing the Alternative for Germany (AfD), as voters prepared to decide a state election that could produce the party’s strongest regional breakthrough to date.
In Halle, around 2,500 people participated in an anti-far-right demonstration, according to local police figures cited by Breitbart. Demonstrators included activists associated with the Antifa movement, with some participants wearing masks and black clothing and carrying Antifa and LGBTQ flags.

A much larger pro-democracy event took place in the state capital, Magdeburg. Breitbart reported an estimated 15,000 participants, while German media reported thousands attending demonstrations and a democracy festival organized by civic groups, trade unions and other organizations.
Anadolu Agency reported that protesters in Magdeburg carried signs calling for the AfD to be banned and urged voters not to support the party. Organizers said the demonstrations were intended to promote tolerance, diversity, democracy and human dignity.

The protests came as the AfD entered Sunday’s election with a commanding lead. Polling cited by Anadolu put the party above 40%, while other reports placed its projected support at approximately 41–43%. Such a result could give the AfD an opportunity to become the first far-right party to lead a German state government in the post-World War II era.
AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund has indicated that he wants to govern without entering a coalition. However, whether the party can form a government depends heavily on the performance of smaller parties and the distribution of seats after the election. German mainstream parties have maintained their refusal to cooperate with the AfD.
The election has also become a major test for Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The CDU has governed Saxony-Anhalt for decades but was polling far behind the AfD, raising questions about the traditional political balance in eastern Germany.
