TAMPERE, Finland — A Finnish man has gone on trial accused of sexually abusing 361 children aged between 9 and 15 through social-media platforms, including Snapchat, in what authorities describe as an exceptionally large sexual-crime case.
The trial opened Monday at the Pirkanmaa District Court in Tampere. The initial proceedings were held publicly, while hearings are expected to continue behind closed doors because of the sensitive nature of the allegations.

Finnish prosecutors allege that the offenses occurred between 2019 and 2022. The principal charges include aggravated sexual abuse of a child, sexual abuse of a child and aggravated distribution of sexual images involving children.
How the Investigation Began
Police discovered a large quantity of images and videos involving unidentified children in 2022 while examining the defendant’s mobile phone during an investigation into a separate criminal case. Investigators subsequently worked to identify the children depicted in the material.
Authorities allege that the defendant contacted children online and persuaded or pressured them to send sexualized photographs and videos. According to prosecutors, the alleged victims were boys from different parts of Finland.
The Finnish National Prosecution Authority said in June that charges had been brought in a case involving 361 injured parties, with prosecutors declining to pursue three additional cases. The defendant has reportedly partially admitted to the conduct during the preliminary investigation.
Hundreds More Potential Victims
The scale of the investigation may be considerably larger than the 361 cases now before the court. Reports indicate that investigators identified additional unidentified victims in material recovered during the investigation.
Breitbart, citing Finnish reporting, said the number of unidentified potential victims could be around 530, although these individuals have not been formally included among the 361 charges.
The distinction is important: the 361 children are the victims represented in the current prosecution, while other potential victims remain unidentified or outside the charges presently before the court.
Proceedings Expected to Continue for Months
The court has scheduled approximately 45 hearing days, with proceedings expected to continue at least until the end of 2026. Because the case involves minors and highly sensitive evidence, much of the trial will be conducted privately.
The case also highlights the challenges authorities face in protecting children from online exploitation, particularly where offenders use social-media platforms to contact minors and solicit illegal material without necessarily meeting their victims in person.
