Israel launched fresh strikes against targets in southern Lebanon on Sunday, September 6, killing four people and injuring at least six others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The Israeli military said the attacks were carried out after Hezbollah launched two drones toward Israeli troops.

The strikes targeted what Israel described as Hezbollah weapons-storage facilities and a command center. One of the sites was a disused hospital building that Israel said Hezbollah had converted into a military facility. Lebanon, however, accused Israel of striking civilian infrastructure and violating the U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the latest attacks as a dangerous escalation and appealed for international intervention. Hezbollah accused Israel of deliberately increasing tensions while U.S.-mediated negotiations continue over the group’s weapons and Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon.

The violence highlights the fragility of the June ceasefire. Israel continues to maintain a security zone in parts of southern Lebanon and says its forces must remain there until the Hezbollah threat is eliminated. Hezbollah, meanwhile, has rejected demands for disarmament while Israeli forces remain on Lebanese territory.

The latest escalation also carries a broader regional dimension. Iran has warned the United States that it would respond forcefully if Israel launches an offensive against a strategic Hezbollah-held ridge in southern Lebanon, raising concern that another major Israel-Hezbollah confrontation could become connected to the wider Iran conflict.
