At least 30 people have been killed and approximately 80 injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain on Wednesday, October 28, prompting a major emergency response and the suspension of rail services along a key route connecting Madrid with southern Spain. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue workers continued searching the wreckage.

Two trains collide near Toledo

The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. local time near the municipality of Urda, in Toledo province, approximately 130 kilometers south of Madrid. The trains were traveling along the high-speed railway corridor linking the Spanish capital with Seville and other destinations in southern Spain.

The trains involved were operated by Spain’s state-owned Renfe railway company and private operator Iryo. Initial reports indicated that the Renfe train struck the rear of the Iryo train, which had stopped on the tracks.

The impact derailed several carriages, with some reportedly tumbling down an embankment. Images from the scene showed heavily damaged train cars, twisted metal and debris scattered across the surrounding area.

Emergency crews search for survivors

Firefighters, police officers, medical teams and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the crash site. Rescue workers concentrated their efforts on the most severely damaged carriages, where additional victims were feared to be trapped.

Injured passengers were transported to hospitals across the region. Local authorities also arranged temporary facilities to assist those affected by the collision.

Regional officials warned that the number of fatalities could increase because rescuers had not yet reached all sections of the wreckage.

Railway services suspended

Spain’s railway infrastructure administrator, ADIF, confirmed the accident and the suspension of services along the affected corridor. Rail connections between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia were disrupted as authorities responded to the emergency and began examining the circumstances of the collision.

The disruption affected a major transportation route used by passengers traveling between Madrid and southern Spain. Officials had not announced a definitive timetable for restoring normal service in the initial reports.

Cause of the collision under investigation

Authorities had not established a definitive cause of the crash in the initial official accounts. Investigators are expected to examine the trains, track conditions, signaling systems and operational records to determine why the collision occurred.

Some Spanish media reports raised questions about a possible signaling-system failure, but this had not been established as the confirmed cause. The investigation must determine whether technical problems, operational decisions or other factors contributed to the accident.

Government expresses condolences

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the accident and offered support to the victims and their families. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia also conveyed their condolences and expressed solidarity with those affected and the emergency personnel responding to the disaster.

The collision also renewed attention to railway safety in Spain. Another deadly accident involving high-speed trains occurred near Adamuz in January 2026, killing dozens of people and raising questions about railway safety and infrastructure.

The investigation into Wednesday’s crash remains critical to establishing what happened and whether changes to railway operations or safety procedures will be necessary.

This report reflects information available on October 28, 2026. Casualty figures and other details may change as authorities release further updates.
