RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A Saudi-led military coalition announced Friday that it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement in the Mecca region, marking another reported aerial threat against Saudi territory.

The coalition confirmed the interception in a statement published on social media by its official spokesperson, Major General Turki Al-Maliki.

“A drone launched by the terrorist Houthi militia has been intercepted and destroyed in the Makkah region,” the coalition stated.

The announcement did not immediately provide further details about the drone’s intended target, its launch location, or the precise circumstances surrounding the interception. No casualties or property damage were reported in connection with the incident.

According to Reuters, the interception comes amid a series of cross-border attacks involving Houthi drones and missiles targeting locations across Saudi Arabia, including military installations, airports, and energy infrastructure.

The Houthis, an Iran-aligned armed movement that controls significant portions of Yemen, have been involved in a prolonged conflict with Saudi Arabia and its regional partners.

There was no immediate Houthi response to Friday’s announcement. The group has previously denied accusations that it deliberately targeted Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holiest cities, following earlier Saudi-led coalition claims involving aerial threats near the religious centers.

The latest interception also follows a reported Houthi drone incident near Mecca in September, when Saudi air defenses destroyed an unmanned aircraft before it could enter the holy city’s restricted airspace.

Saudi authorities have repeatedly emphasized the importance of protecting the Kingdom’s territory, critical infrastructure, and the two holy cities against aerial threats.

The latest incident adds to continuing security tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement as the regional conflict continues to involve missile and drone operations across the Arabian Peninsula.
