DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Reveals Plans to Eliminate FEMA

| Published March 25, 2025

In a recent White House cabinet meeting, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced plans to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). She highlighted DHS’s achievements, including a 50% increase in deportations and the U.S. Coast Guard’s record-breaking drug interdictions. Noem emphasized repositioning the Coast Guard fleet to address the fentanyl crisis and enhance southern border security.

This development follows Noem’s earlier statements supporting the dismantling of FEMA. In February, she advocated for eliminating FEMA in its current form, criticizing it as a “bureaucracy that’s picking and choosing winners.” Additionally, in February, Noem terminated four FEMA employees for unauthorized payments related to migrant housing in New York City.

President Donald Trump has also expressed criticism of FEMA, stating that the agency “has not done their job for the last four years” and suggesting that states should manage their own disaster responses.

CONCLUSION

Kristi Noem’s push to eliminate FEMA aligns with broader efforts to streamline federal disaster response and shift responsibilities to state governments. Her stance reflects ongoing conservative criticisms of federal bureaucracy, particularly regarding inefficiencies and resource allocation. While supporters argue that decentralization could lead to faster, more localized disaster relief, critics warn that eliminating FEMA could leave states unprepared for large-scale emergencies. As the debate continues, the future of FEMA under the Trump administration remains uncertain, with potential policy shifts that could redefine federal disaster management in the coming years.
