A river full of crocodiles and hippos is dangerous enough. Add powerful rapids, shifting water levels, narrow basalt gorges and one of the largest waterfalls on Earth — and crossing it becomes something else entirely.
This is the Zambezi, Africa’s fourth-longest river. For nearly 2,700 kilometres it cuts across southern Africa, feeding communities, wetlands and some of the continent’s most important wildlife areas.
