A river full of crocodiles and hippos is dangerous enough. Add powerful rapids, shifting water levels, narrow basalt gorges and one of the largest waterfalls on Earth — and crossing it becomes something else entirely.

This is the Zambezi, Africa’s fourth-longest river. For nearly 2,700 kilometres it cuts across southern Africa, feeding communities, wetlands and some of the continent’s most important wildlife areas. But near Victoria Falls, the calm river disappears — and what replaces it has challenged travellers, engineers and explorers for centuries
