Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his attendance at peace talks in Ankara, Turkey, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and has emphasized that he will only engage in direct negotiations if Russian President Vladimir Putin is present. Zelenskyy asserts that Putin’s participation is essential to demonstrate Russia’s commitment to ending the conflict, stating that a no-show would indicate a lack of genuine intent for peace.

The Kremlin has not confirmed Putin’s attendance, suggesting that Russia will announce its representative for the talks when deemed necessary. This ambiguity has led to increased pressure from Ukraine and its allies. Ukrainian officials, including Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, have called for new sanctions against Russia if Putin fails to attend, arguing that only Putin has the authority to make decisive commitments.

European leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have expressed support for the talks and warned of stricter sanctions should Russia not engage constructively. The European Union is advocating for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire to create a conducive environment for negotiations.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, has shown interest in the peace process, with senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg set to represent the U.S. at the negotiations. Trump’s administration is encouraging both leaders to participate directly, emphasizing the importance of a face-to-face meeting to facilitate a resolution.

As the date approaches, the international community awaits confirmation of Putin’s attendance, which will significantly influence the direction and potential outcomes of the peace talks.
