GAZA CITY — Israeli forces carried out a covert operation in Gaza City on Tuesday targeting a senior Hamas security official, with Israel saying the operation resulted in the capture of a high-ranking member of Hamas’s internal security apparatus. The raid was followed by Israeli airstrikes after the operation was reportedly detected.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that a senior Hamas member had been captured, while an Israeli security source identified the detainee as the head of Hamas’s internal security service. Other reports identified the man as Moein Muhammad al-Arabid, although details surrounding his identity and the circumstances of his capture remain limited.
Covert Raid in Gaza City
According to Palestinian officials, an Israeli special forces operation was launched in Gaza City with Israeli air support. The operation was reportedly discovered by Hamas forces, prompting Israeli forces to use airstrikes to cover their withdrawal.
The fighting resulted in civilian casualties. Reuters reported that at least five Palestinians were killed, including three children and a woman, while additional people were wounded. Palestinian officials said Israeli strikes hit areas where displaced families were sheltering.

Israel Says Senior Hamas Figure Captured

Hamas Condemns Operation
Hamas and Palestinian officials described the raid as a violation of the ceasefire and accused Israel of using military force against Gaza despite the agreement.
The operation comes despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire that began in October 2025. While the ceasefire halted large-scale fighting, Israeli military operations and Palestinian casualties have continued amid disputes over Hamas’s disarmament and further Israeli withdrawals.
Civilian Toll Raises New Concerns
The latest casualties have renewed concerns over the durability of the ceasefire and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Reuters reported that more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli operations since the ceasefire, according to Gaza health authorities. Israel has maintained that its continued military actions are intended to prevent militant attacks and address security threats.
The United Nations has also warned of worsening humanitarian conditions. The World Food Programme announced Tuesday that it would cut food assistance in the West Bank because of funding shortages, while food insecurity remains severe in Gaza.
Ceasefire Under Pressure
The Gaza operation highlights the difficulty of maintaining the ceasefire while Israel continues to demand the dismantling of Hamas’s military and security infrastructure and Hamas resists disarmament.
The capture of a senior Hamas security official could provide Israel with valuable intelligence while simultaneously increasing tensions surrounding negotiations for the next phase of the ceasefire.
For Gaza residents, however, the latest raid and airstrikes demonstrate how fragile the truce remains, with military operations capable of erupting despite the formal cessation of large-scale hostilities.
