Kai-Ji Adam Lo, a 30-year-old Vancouver resident, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder following a tragic vehicle-ramming attack at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party on April 26, 2025. The incident occurred in the Sunset neighborhood, where Lo allegedly drove a black Audi Q7 into a crowd of festival-goers, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and over 30 injuries, including victims as young as five years old .
Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive, instead highlighting Lo’s history of mental health issues. He had previously interacted with law enforcement and healthcare professionals concerning his mental health . Additionally, Lo’s older brother, Alexander, was found dead in January 2024, and a suspect was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death .
In the wake of his brother’s death, Lo organized an online fundraiser to cover funeral expenses, raising over $9,000. Later, in August 2024, Lo’s mother attempted suicide and was hospitalized for a month, prompting him to initiate another fundraiser, which yielded poor results .
The Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, celebrating Filipino heritage, had been a joyous occasion before the attack. News anchor Jason Pires, who was emceeing the event, described the incident as deeply personal and gut-wrenching, emphasizing the strong sense of unity and resilience within the Filipino community despite the horrific event .
As the investigation continues, authorities warn that the death toll may rise as several of the wounded remain in critical condition .
