A Russian drone struck a passenger bus in southern Ukraine on Wednesday, killing five people and injuring at least seven others, according to Ukrainian officials and reports from the Associated Press.
The attack occurred in Ukraine’s Nikopol district of Dnipropetrovsk region, an area that has faced repeated Russian attacks since the start of the full-scale war. Regional authorities said the drone hit the bus while it was carrying passengers.
Five Passengers Killed
Dnipropetrovsk regional authorities reported that four men and one woman were killed in the strike. At least seven other people were wounded and taken for medical treatment.
Images released after the attack showed the damaged passenger vehicle following the strike.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as having no military rationale. His comments came amid a broader wave of Russian drone attacks against Ukrainian transportation and infrastructure.
Passenger Train Also Hit
The bus was not the only civilian transportation target reported hit Wednesday.
Ukrainian railway authorities said a passenger train traveling on the Kyiv–Mykolaiv route was also struck by a drone. The train was carrying 168 passengers and crew members, but authorities said everyone was evacuated safely and there were no reported casualties from that incident.
The attacks have renewed concerns about the vulnerability of Ukraine’s civilian transportation network, which has become particularly important since regular civilian air travel remains suspended because of the war.
Russia Launches Dozens of Drones
The passenger-bus strike occurred during a larger Russian drone offensive across Ukraine.
Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched approximately 80 drones overnight and into Wednesday morning. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted many of the drones, but officials reported impacts and damage in several areas, including Kyiv and other regions.
In addition to the casualties from the bus strike, Ukrainian officials reported other injuries and damage resulting from the attacks.
The attacks also affected railway infrastructure and other transportation facilities.
Growing Pressure on Ukraine’s Transportation Network
Ukraine’s rail system has become a critical part of civilian life during the war. With commercial aviation largely unavailable, trains and buses carry passengers across the country.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said railway infrastructure has suffered extensive damage during the war and appealed to international partners for assistance replacing damaged locomotives and other equipment.
The latest strikes therefore come at a time when Ukraine is attempting to keep its transportation network operating despite continued Russian attacks.
Wider Exchange of Drone Strikes
The attacks on Ukraine occurred as both Russia and Ukraine continued to employ drones extensively.
Reuters reported that Ukrainian forces also carried out drone operations against Russian-controlled territory, including an attack in which Ukrainian forces said a Russian major general was killed. That claim has not been independently verified, and Russia’s Defense Ministry had not publicly commented on the report.
The continuing drone warfare has increasingly affected areas away from the immediate front lines, exposing civilians and critical infrastructure to the consequences of the conflict.
