Russia’s latest wave of drone and missile strikes has disrupted television broadcasting across Ukraine after attacks damaged key data centers in Kyiv, marking a significant escalation in the targeting of the country’s communications infrastructure.

According to the Kyiv Post, the attacks struck facilities operated by Cosmonova, one of Ukraine’s major data center providers. The damage triggered outages affecting television broadcasters, streaming platforms, internet providers, and online news services. Ukrainian technology experts say the strikes reflect a broader campaign aimed at weakening the country’s digital infrastructure rather than simply targeting military assets.

Television channels taken off the air

Several Ukrainian broadcasters reported losing their television signal shortly after the strikes, while others experienced interruptions to their online video distribution.

Among the affected services were:

  • Novyny.LIVE
  • We Are Ukraine+
  • Army TV
  • Suspilne’s video broadcasting
  • MEGOGO
  • SWEET TV

Most media organizations said their websites, YouTube channels, Telegram, and other social media platforms remained operational as engineers worked to restore normal broadcasting.

Moscow claims military communications were targeted

Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged striking the Cosmonova facilities, claiming the data centers supported mobile internet services and infrastructure connected to Starlink communications used by Ukraine’s armed forces.

Ukraine has not confirmed Russia’s characterization of the facilities. Ukrainian officials and media organizations instead emphasized the widespread civilian impact, saying the strikes disrupted public access to news, television, and digital communications.

Digital infrastructure under growing pressure

The broadcasting outages followed earlier attacks that damaged multiple Kyiv data centers during the same week. Those strikes reportedly disrupted internet access for around 100,000 households, affected cloud-hosting providers, and caused interruptions to railway and public communication systems.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s objective is to deprive Ukrainians of internet connectivity, communications, and essential digital services, adding that emergency efforts are underway to strengthen protection for critical infrastructure.

Why the attacks matter

Modern television broadcasting depends heavily on centralized data centers that host streaming servers, cloud storage, and content distribution networks. Even when television studios remain undamaged, attacks on these facilities can simultaneously interrupt traditional broadcasts and internet-based media services.

Engineers have begun rerouting traffic through backup infrastructure, but experts warn that repeated strikes could continue causing temporary nationwide disruptions.

🧩 Bottom Line:

Russia’s strike on Kyiv’s Cosmonova data centers temporarily knocked multiple Ukrainian television channels and streaming services off the air, underscoring the growing importance—and vulnerability—of digital infrastructure in modern warfare. While many news outlets remained accessible through websites and social media, the incident demonstrated how attacks on communications networks can quickly affect millions of civilians seeking reliable information during wartime.
