KYIV, Ukraine — Russia has intensified its ballistic missile campaign against Ukraine as Kyiv announces significant battlefield gains in the southeastern part of the country, creating a sharp contrast between Moscow’s growing long-range pressure and Ukraine’s reported counteroffensive successes.
Ukrainian officials say their forces have retaken 26 settlements and approximately 745 square kilometers (288 square miles) of territory during operations along the southeastern front this year. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the gains were achieved through a coordinated operation focused on the area where the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions meet.
At the same time, Russian forces have continued launching increasingly frequent missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, placing additional pressure on Ukraine’s already strained air-defense network.
Kyiv Reports Major Territorial Gains
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces have made substantial progress during what Kyiv describes as a precision counteroffensive.
Ukraine’s military reported the liberation of 26 settlements, while the independent Ukrainian monitoring group DeepState confirmed that Ukrainian forces had regained control of 19 settlements and pushed Russian forces back in six other areas. The battlefield claims and released military footage have not all been independently verified.
The reported advances are concentrated around the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, an area that has become increasingly important as both sides attempt to reshape the front line.
The developments represent a significant shift from earlier periods of the war when Russian forces were steadily expanding their territorial gains.
Russia Increases Ballistic Missile Pressure
While Ukraine reports gains on the ground, Russia has intensified its use of long-range weapons.
The Institute for the Study of War has assessed that Russian forces significantly increased their ballistic-missile launches during 2026. One recent assessment said Russia’s monthly ballistic-missile launches had more than tripled between April and July.
Ukraine has increasingly warned that it lacks sufficient advanced air-defense interceptors to stop ballistic missiles, particularly weapons requiring systems such as the U.S.-supplied Patriot.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to Washington and other Western governments for additional Patriot interceptors, arguing that stronger air defenses are essential to protecting Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
Recent Strikes Highlight Air-Defense Vulnerability
The escalation has already produced deadly consequences.
On Aug. 10, a Russian missile attack on the Zaporizhstal steel plant in Zaporizhzhia killed seven workers and injured at least 24 people, according to Ukrainian officials. Zelenskyy said North Korean ballistic missiles were used alongside Russian weapons, although Moscow has not confirmed that claim.
Earlier, a Russian ballistic-missile attack on the Kyiv region killed one person, while Ukrainian authorities reported that several ballistic missiles were not intercepted. Ukrainian officials have pointed to dwindling Patriot ammunition as one of the major weaknesses in the country’s air-defense network.
The continued attacks have increased concerns that Russia is attempting to exploit gaps in Ukraine’s missile defenses while maintaining pressure on civilian and industrial infrastructure.
Ukraine’s Battlefield Gains Challenge Moscow’s Advance
The reported Ukrainian advances come as Russia’s momentum along parts of the front appears to have slowed.
Ukrainian officials say their counteroffensive has pushed Russian troops away from positions in the southeastern sector, while independent battlefield monitoring has confirmed at least some of the reported territorial changes.
Russia, however, continues to maintain pressure in the east, particularly in Donetsk, where Moscow has long sought to capture additional territory.
The competing developments illustrate the increasingly complex nature of the war: Ukraine is attempting to regain ground with localized counteroffensives while Russia relies heavily on missile, drone and glide-bomb attacks to weaken Ukraine’s military and infrastructure.
Patriot Shortages Become Strategic Concern
Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russia’s ballistic campaign could become one of the most important factors in the coming months.
The Guardian reported that Ukraine faces a critical shortage of Patriot missiles, which have been among its most effective defenses against Russian ballistic and cruise missiles. The shortage has become particularly serious as the United States and its allies manage competing demands for air-defense weapons.
Zelenskyy has argued that additional Patriot interceptors could substantially improve Ukraine’s ability to protect its population and infrastructure from Russian missile attacks.
Russia Also Faces Ukrainian Strikes
Moscow’s intensified missile campaign has been accompanied by increasingly ambitious Ukrainian attacks inside Russia.
Ukraine has targeted Russian oil refineries and other strategic infrastructure in an effort to disrupt Moscow’s war economy. On Aug. 14, Ukrainian drones struck the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat refinery in Russia’s Bashkortostan region, approximately 1,300 kilometers from Ukraine, setting part of the facility ablaze, according to reports.
The continuing exchange of long-range attacks demonstrates that the conflict is increasingly being fought beyond the immediate front line.
Peace Efforts Remain Stalled
The battlefield escalation comes despite continuing international efforts to push Russia and Ukraine toward negotiations.
Russia continues to demand territorial concessions that Kyiv has rejected, while Ukraine is seeking additional Western military assistance to strengthen its negotiating position.
The latest battlefield developments could therefore influence future diplomatic calculations. Ukraine’s reported territorial gains may strengthen Kyiv’s position, while Russia’s ability to conduct sustained missile attacks gives Moscow another means of applying pressure without relying solely on advances by ground forces.
