I remember back when a summer day temperature of 30-32°C. was just a nice, warm summer day??

Today’s hot temperature is being measured under urban heat island conditions (UHI) and then adjusted for even higher temperature, and still it only gets “as high” as back then. Why is that?

And why does it seem to only be getting colder?

MIAMI, FLORIDA, August 20, 2026 — Miami’s official climate station reached 100 degrees on Tuesday afternoon, tying an all-time record that had stood since July 21, 1942. In a continuous climate record beginning in 1895, the city has now touched triple digits exactly twice.

The reading landed inside a heat dome that had 72.5 million Americans under heat alerts, with NOAA HeatRisk running at Level 4 of 4 across parts of the Southeast, heat index values between 105 and 112 degrees, and overnight lows in the upper 70s offering no recovery. On the same afternoon, in the same air mass, Kingfisher, Oklahoma hit 112.

The record was not set by an extraordinary air mass. It was set because one of the two things standing between Miami and triple digits did not show up — and the question forecasters cannot answer yet is how often that failure is going to repeat
