France’s nationwide student protests have resulted in nearly 7,000 arrests and caused an estimated €30 million (approximately US$33.6 million) in damage, according to figures reported by French authorities. The demonstrations, which began in mid-September, have spread across the country, prompting clashes between protesters and police and raising concerns about school funding, public safety and the use of force against young demonstrators.

According to figures released by France’s Ministry of Justice on Friday, October 9, authorities had recorded 6,877 arrests since the protests began. Approximately 86% of those arrested were under the age of 18, highlighting the significant involvement of teenagers in the unrest.

Protests Over Education Funding

The demonstrations began with student concerns about underfunded schools, shortages of educational staff and access to higher education. What started as school blockades and student demonstrations subsequently spread to other parts of France, drawing university students, trade unions, parents and other supporters.

On October 6, more than 250,000 people reportedly took part in demonstrations nationwide, according to figures cited by The Associated Press. Protesters called for improvements to education funding and school conditions.

Although many demonstrations have remained peaceful, some have been marked by vandalism, fires and confrontations with police. Authorities have used tear gas and other crowd-control measures to disperse gatherings, while students and rights advocates have raised concerns about the proportionality of police responses.

Damage to Schools and Public Property

The French government has estimated that the damage linked to the demonstrations has reached at least €30 million. Several schools have reportedly suffered vandalism, break-ins and damage to equipment.

In one incident near Bordeaux, a school reported losses estimated at between €100,000 and €200,000 after intruders allegedly damaged or stole computers and started fires inside the building, according to reporting by Breitbart citing local prosecutors.

French Education Minister Édouard Geffray also reported that more than 100 school staff members had been injured during the unrest, according to the same report.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

The Ministry of Justice reported that 2,376 people were facing charges connected to incidents during the demonstrations. Authorities had brought a substantial proportion of those involved before judges, while 21 people were reportedly placed in pretrial detention at the time of the figures’ release.

The high proportion of minors among those arrested has intensified debate over how authorities should respond to youth-led demonstrations while protecting public safety and the right to peaceful assembly.

The United Nations human rights office said it was following the situation with concern and called for peaceful demonstrations and proportionate use of force.

Government Faces Pressure to Respond

The protests have created a challenge for the French government, which faces demands to address education concerns while restoring order around schools and public spaces.

Officials have condemned violent incidents, while critics of the police response have called for scrutiny of injuries sustained by students during confrontations. Several serious injuries involving police crowd-control weapons have also prompted investigations.

The demonstrations have become a broader debate over education policy, policing and the relationship between young people and the state. Whether the government can address students’ demands and reduce tensions remains uncertain as protests continue.
