PARIS, France — Student protests in France are continuing as demonstrators demand better school facilities, more teachers and reforms to the country’s education system. Despite government promises to address staffing shortages, student groups say the proposed measures are not enough to resolve the problems facing public schools.
France’s revolting students vowed Thursday night they are only getting started and plan to continue their nationwide rioting, blockades, demonstrations and boycotts now and into the foreseeable future.
The government has pledged to deploy approximately 3,000 teachers to help fill vacant positions. However, students and education unions are also calling for increased funding, smaller class sizes and changes to Parcoursup, the country’s university admissions platform, which critics say can disadvantage students from less privileged backgrounds.
Some demonstrations have escalated into confrontations with police, with tear gas used to disperse crowds in Paris. The clashes have raised concerns about police tactics and the treatment of young demonstrators.
The protests are creating another challenge for President Emmanuel Macron’s government, which must balance demands for improvements to public services against pressure to control government spending. Student and teacher unions have signaled plans for further demonstrations if their demands are not adequately addressed.
