In a series of unprecedented events, multiple prisons across France have been targeted in coordinated attacks involving arson and gunfire. These incidents, which began on April 13, 2025, have prompted a national terrorism investigation and heightened concerns over prison security and organized criminal activities.
Seven establishments were targeted, according to the Parisien newspaper: in Toulon, Aix-En-Provence, Marseille, Valence and Nîmes in southern France, and in Villepinte and Nanterre, near Paris.”
France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office is investigating the attacks.
Sequence of Attacks
The assaults commenced with the torching of seven vehicles at the National School of Prison Administration in Agen. Subsequent attacks included the firing of approximately 15 rounds from an automatic weapon at the Toulon-La Farlède prison and arson incidents at facilities in Nanterre, Aix-Luynes, Valence, and Tarascon. In total, at least 24 vehicles have been destroyed, and several prison staff residences have been targeted, though no injuries have been reported.
Toulon prison was shot at by automatic weapons.
Emergence of DDPF
A Telegram group named “Droit des Prisonniers Français” (DDPF) has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group, which surfaced shortly before the incidents, advocates for prisoners’ rights and has called for improved prison conditions. Authorities are investigating the group’s links to anarchist movements and its potential connections to organized crime networks.
Government Response
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin has condemned the attacks, attributing them to retaliation against the government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to enhancing prison security and continuing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the penal system.
Ongoing Investigations
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office and France’s domestic intelligence agency, DGSI, are leading the investigations. Authorities are exploring the possibility that the attacks are part of a broader strategy by extremist groups to challenge state authority and disrupt public order.
As the situation develops, the French government is expected to implement additional measures to safeguard correctional facilities and address the underlying issues contributing to the unrest.
