Zelenskyy confirms Ukrainian strikes on Russian strategic facilities as Moscow reports massive overnight drone barrage across multiple regions
Ukraine launched a major long-range attack deep inside Russia on Saturday, striking industrial infrastructure in the Samara region as Kyiv continues to expand its ability to hit targets hundreds of miles from the front lines.
Russian officials confirmed a large-scale attack on the southwestern region, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had carried out strikes against strategic Russian facilities. Another Target: Savasleyka Air Base
The Samara operation was reportedly part of a broader Ukrainian offensive.
Zelenskyy also confirmed a strike against Savasleyka air base in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, where Russian MiG-31 fighter aircraft are based.
Those aircraft are capable of carrying Russia’s Kinzhal ballistic missiles, giving the air base significant military importance.
The attacks therefore appear designed not simply to cause damage but to disrupt infrastructure that supports Russia’s ability to wage war.
Moscow Claims Hundreds of Drones Intercepted
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted or destroyed 598 Ukrainian drones across 19 regions, including areas around Crimea and surrounding seas, during the massive overnight assault.
The Russian claims could not be independently verified in their entirety.
Even so, the reported scale of the attack underscores the increasing frequency with which Ukraine is attempting to overwhelm Russian air defenses by launching large numbers of drones while simultaneously employing longer-range missiles.

AP reported that a Russian drone attack in southeastern Ukraine killed a three-month-old baby and wounded 11 others. Russia also struck Ukrainian port infrastructure around Odesa, Izmail and Yuzhnyi.
Ukraine’s Air Force said it had shot down 124 of 152 Russian-launched drones during the latest attacks.
The exchange illustrates how the war is increasingly becoming a battle of long-range strike capabilities, with both sides attempting to hit strategic targets far from the front.
A New Phase in Ukraine’s Long-Range War
The Samara strike could prove significant because of both the distance involved and the nature of the reported target.
