A U.S. Air Force service member has died after falling from the rafters of a stadium during a pregame military rappelling demonstration in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, October 17, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred at the Alamodome shortly before a college football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners and the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen. The demonstration was part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans event, which honors military personnel and veterans.
The service member fell while descending by rope from the stadium ceiling to the playing field. Emergency personnel provided treatment on the field before transporting him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs.
Service Member Was Part of Four-Person Demonstration Team
The airman was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, an Air Force unit associated with training tactical air control personnel. Four service members were scheduled to participate in the pregame rappelling demonstration.
The service member’s identity had not been publicly released in initial reports as authorities worked to establish the circumstances of the fatal accident.
Reports described the fall as approximately 150 feet from the stadium rafters. Witnesses said the descent appeared uncontrolled, with the service member striking the field in front of spectators gathered for the ceremony. The precise sequence of events remains under investigation.
Spectators Left in Shock
The incident unfolded in front of thousands of fans at the Alamodome. Witnesses described the stadium falling silent as the demonstration stopped and emergency personnel rushed to assist the fallen airman.
The football game was delayed by approximately 10 minutes before proceeding. UTSA ultimately defeated Navy, 38–34.
UTSA issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident and offering condolences to the service member’s family and military colleagues.
“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s game,” the university said, adding that it was activating well-being services to support students, faculty and staff affected by the event.
Head coach Jeff Traylor later described the incident as heartbreaking and tragic, acknowledging its effect on the crowd and the atmosphere surrounding the game.
Investigation Underway
Nellis Air Force Base confirmed the death and said the incident was under investigation. Officials have not publicly established what caused the fall or whether equipment failure, human error or another factor contributed to the accident.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances of the rappelling demonstration and the events leading to the fall. Further information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
The fatal accident has cast a shadow over an event intended to recognize the service and sacrifices of U.S. military personnel. Authorities and university officials have expressed condolences to the airman’s family and colleagues as the investigation continues.
