Russian strikes on Ukraine’s second-largest city early on Saturday killed at least five people and injured at least 17 others in what the mayor of Kharkiv described as the biggest drone attack since the start of the war. Two more people were killed when a Russian missile struck a high-rise building in the southern city of Kherson, regional authorities said.

Russia launched one of its most intense aerial assaults on Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022. The overnight barrage targeted multiple regions, with Kharkiv and Kyiv bearing the brunt of the attacks.

Kharkiv: Devastation in Ukraine’s Second-Largest City

In Kharkiv, a massive combined assault involving drones, missiles, and aerial glide bombs resulted in at least three fatalities and 22 injuries, including an infant. Mayor Ihor Terekhov described it as the most powerful attack on the city since the war began. The strikes damaged 18 apartment buildings and 13 private homes, with some victims potentially trapped under rubble. A civilian industrial facility was hit by 40 drones, one missile, and four bombs, igniting fires and causing widespread destruction.

Kyiv: Fires and Casualties Amid Drone Strikes

In the capital, Kyiv, Russian drone debris caused fires in multiple districts, including Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi, Obolonskyi, and Podilskyi. A residential high-rise in Pecherskyi suffered significant damage, with fires breaking out on the upper floors. At least six people were injured, including a pregnant woman; two individuals were hospitalized.

Nationwide Impact and Military Response

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched a total of 215 drones and missiles overnight. Air defenses intercepted 87 drones and seven missiles. Other regions, including Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Ternopil, were also targeted.

Escalation Following Operation Spiderweb

The assault is believed to be a retaliation for Ukraine’s recent Operation Spiderweb, which damaged or destroyed at least 40 Russian warplanes at four airbases. In the past 48 hours, Russia has launched over 400 drones and 45 missiles across Ukraine, resulting in at least six deaths and 80 injuries.

Diplomatic Stalemate and International Reactions

Despite Ukraine’s offer of a 30-day ceasefire and direct talks between Presidents Zelenskyy and Putin, the Kremlin has not relented. U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that it might be better to let the two sides continue fighting before pursuing renewed peace efforts.

The implications of Russia’s massive June 7, 2025 aerial assault on Kharkiv, Kyiv, and other Ukrainian cities are significant and wide-ranging:

1. Military Escalation and Retaliation Spiral

This strike—reportedly the most powerful on Kharkiv since 2022—suggests Russia is willing to escalate in response to successful Ukrainian operations like Operation Spiderweb. It marks a return to high-intensity warfare, raising the risk of broader regional destabilization.

2. Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Targeting

With dozens injured, homes destroyed, and civilians—including infants and pregnant women—hurt or killed, the attack highlights Russia’s continued use of terror-style tactics against non-combatants, deepening the humanitarian crisis and increasing the burden on Ukraine’s infrastructure and emergency services.

3. Testing Ukraine’s Air Defenses

The launch of 215 drones and missiles in one night appears to test the limits of Ukrainian air defense systems, many of which rely heavily on Western aid. A strain on these defenses could expose vulnerabilities if resupply or maintenance falters.

4. Strained Diplomatic Prospects

Ukraine’s offer of a 30-day ceasefire and willingness for direct talks stand in stark contrast to Russia’s aggressive posture. This stark mismatch makes diplomatic resolution less likely in the near term, possibly prolonging the war and increasing global fatigue.

5. International Response and U.S. Policy Shift

President Trump’s suggestion to delay peace efforts may signal a shift in U.S. strategic posture—toward letting the conflict “burn out” rather than actively mediating. This could embolden Russia or demoralize Ukraine, depending on how allies interpret American intent.

Overall Takeaway:

Russia’s June 7 assault marks a dangerous escalation in the war, signaling that Moscow is prepared to intensify attacks on civilian areas in retaliation for Ukrainian military successes. The scale and brutality of the strikes—combined with muted international diplomatic progress—highlight the fragility of Ukraine’s defenses, the urgency for sustained global support, and the diminishing hope for near-term peace.
