A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, October 1, setting part of the building on fire while more than 100 students and staff were sheltering during an air-raid warning. No injuries were reported, according to Ukrainian authorities and international news reports.
The strike was captured on CCTV, showing the drone hitting the school and producing a large explosion. Sky News published footage of the incident as Russia continued a series of intensified aerial attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
The latest attack follows a deadly September 28 strike on Kyiv’s National Academy of Sciences, highlighting the growing pressure on Ukraine’s air-defense network as Russia employs faster, jet-powered drones.
Kyiv school hit during morning attack
The drone struck the school building during a wider Russian air assault on Kyiv.
According to Reuters, the drone hit the building’s third floor, causing a fire and extensive damage to windows and parts of the structure. CCTV footage reviewed by Reuters showed a fireball erupting when the drone struck.
The presence of the students inside the school’s bomb shelter prevented casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the children and teachers had been in the shelter when the strike occurred.
Sky News released a 42-second video showing the moment the Russian drone hit the school.
Southern Bridge also targeted
The school was not the only location affected.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Russia also targeted the Southern Bridge over the Dnipro River. The bridge did not suffer major structural damage, but metro traffic across it was temporarily suspended following the attack.
The attacks came amid what Ukrainian officials describe as a broader campaign against infrastructure as winter approaches.
Ukraine has struggled to intercept some of the newer Russian jet-powered drones because of their increased speed and flight characteristics. Reuters reported that Ukrainian officials have been testing new interceptor systems as they attempt to strengthen the country’s defenses.
Deadly strike on National Academy of Sciences
The latest school attack follows a deadly strike on Kyiv’s National Academy of Sciences on September 28.
A Russian drone hit the Academy’s building in central Kyiv, causing a major fire and forcing people to escape through windows as flames spread through the structure.
Reuters reported that two people were killed in the Academy strike, while more than 80 people were injured across Ukraine during the wider wave of Russian attacks that day.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine said the strike hit the building of its Presidium and caused significant damage, with fire engulfing upper floors. The Academy said two people died in the attack.
Reuters footage from the scene showed people climbing from windows and using emergency ladders to escape the burning building.
A changing Russian drone campaign
The attacks are taking place as Russia increasingly uses jet-powered drones in its strikes against Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials say these weapons are more difficult to intercept than slower, propeller-driven drones. Reuters reported that, during the September 28 attack, 90 of 120 drones launched against Ukraine were jet-powered, with Ukrainian forces intercepting 57% of them.
The change in drone technology has added pressure to Ukraine’s already stretched air-defense system.
The attacks have also increasingly occurred during daylight hours, bringing the threat directly into populated areas while schools, businesses and government institutions are operating.
Russia says it targets military objectives
Moscow has maintained that its forces target military or strategically important infrastructure rather than civilians.
Russian officials have described some strikes as attacks against Ukrainian military-related facilities, data centers, fuel infrastructure and other strategic targets.
Ukraine, however, has repeatedly accused Russia of deliberately attacking civilian infrastructure.
The two sides have continued to exchange long-range drone strikes throughout the war, with Ukraine also targeting Russian oil facilities, military-related infrastructure and other sites inside Russia.
Odesa also hit
The latest wave was not limited to Kyiv.
In Odesa, Ukrainian officials said a Russian strike damaged infrastructure and wounded one person at a business center. Russia said it had targeted a data center in Odesa and a cargo vessel at nearby Chornomorsk.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone explosion killed one person in the Belgorod region.
The continuing attacks demonstrate that the conflict remains an increasingly wide-ranging aerial confrontation, with both countries using drones to strike targets well beyond the immediate front lines.
