Flydubai Pilot Hailed After Midair Attack as Passengers Help Prevent Catastrophe
Captain Smit Machchhar, seriously wounded after being stabbed by his co-pilot, reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to intervene as the aircraft plunged thousands of feet
A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv ended in a dramatic emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an altercation in the cockpit left the captain seriously wounded and the aircraft in a dangerous descent.
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and the flight’s captain, has been widely praised for his actions after he was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot. Despite his injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to enter and restrain the other pilot.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8, operating as Flight FZ1073, was carrying 174 passengers when the incident occurred. All passengers ultimately survived.
A sudden descent and struggle in the cockpit
The flight was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an emergency unfolded roughly two and a half hours after departure.
According to reporting cited by Reuters and other outlets, the aircraft dropped approximately 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the incident. Flight-tracking data showed extreme altitude fluctuations before the aircraft stabilized.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot appeared to have attempted to crash the aircraft after attacking the captain. However, Flydubai has emphasized that the circumstances and motive remain subject to investigation.
The aircraft eventually diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Both pilots were taken to a hospital for treatment, while the suspected attacker was placed in Saudi custody.
Injured captain helped make the cockpit accessible
One of the most significant elements of the incident was Machchhar’s reported decision to open the cockpit door despite being seriously injured.
Passenger Yaniv Hayoun later told Netanyahu that the door appeared to have been unlocked before Machchhar lost consciousness. The Jerusalem Post reported that Hayoun believed the captain had deliberately managed to release the door so that people outside could reach the cockpit.
Once the door was accessible, several passengers entered the cockpit and helped overpower the co-pilot.
The Times of Israel reported that passengers Yaniv Hayoun, Zvika Manes and Asaf Rajuan intervened, while Dr. Shota Musayev provided medical assistance to the injured captain. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he intends to recommend the four men for Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.
Trump calls the rescue an “amazing story”
U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the incident after speaking with Netanyahu.
According to Breitbart’s account, Trump described the rescue as “the most amazing story” and praised the actions of the wounded captain and passengers. Trump also said the co-pilot was “perhaps a terrorist,” while acknowledging that he was recounting information provided to him and that the facts were still being established.
Trump’s account also highlighted Hayoun’s role. According to the account relayed to Trump, Hayoun pulled the attacker away from the controls and briefly helped stabilize the aircraft before qualified pilots aboard the flight took over.
Hayoun reportedly told Israeli media that his familiarity with the television program Air Disasters helped him understand that pulling back on the controls could help arrest the aircraft’s descent. A qualified pilot traveling as a passenger subsequently took control.
The details of individual actions during the emergency remain subject to the ongoing investigation, with accounts coming from passengers, officials and political leaders.
Netanyahu praises the crew and passengers
Netanyahu described Machchhar as a “true hero” and praised the passengers who intervened.
The Times of Israel reported that the prime minister credited the captain with using his remaining strength to open the cockpit door, while passengers then entered and subdued the attacker.
The passengers were later transported from Saudi Arabia to Israel on a replacement flight. Netanyahu and other Israeli officials were present when they arrived at Ben Gurion Airport.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar, while Indian authorities provided assistance to the pilot and his family. Reuters reported that Machchhar was in stable condition after undergoing treatment.
Motive remains under investigation
Despite statements from some Israeli officials characterizing the incident as terrorism or an attempted terrorist attack, the underlying motive has not been established publicly.
Flydubai said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Saudi and UAE authorities are involved in determining what happened aboard the aircraft and why the confrontation occurred.
That distinction is important because the dramatic events have generated multiple accounts from political officials and passengers while the formal investigation is still underway.
Flydubai has also temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.
Effects on aviation security
The incident has already prompted discussion about cockpit security and screening of pilots operating international flights to Israel.
Israeli officials said additional checks would be introduced for pilots flying into the country. The incident also demonstrated the potential consequences of a confrontation inside a modern aircraft cockpit, where access is tightly controlled and the flight crew normally has exclusive command of the aircraft.
The fact that other qualified pilots happened to be aboard the aircraft also became a significant factor in the emergency response, according to reports.
The episode could lead to further examination of pilot screening, cockpit access procedures, crew security and emergency protocols on international routes.

🧩 Bottom Line:
Flight FZ1073 reached safety only after a chain of extraordinary events: a violent cockpit confrontation, the captain’s reported effort to open the cockpit door despite serious injuries, passengers intervening against the attacker and qualified pilots eventually taking control.
All 174 passengers survived, while the captain remained hospitalized for his injuries. The incident is being investigated by authorities, and the motive behind the attack has not yet been established.
The story has already drawn international attention because of the reported actions of Machchhar and the passengers who intervened—but the final account will depend on the findings of the formal investigation.
