Bukele Trolls Far-Left Congressman Who Traveled to El Salvador to Meet with MS-13 Gang Member Kilmar Abrego Garcia

| Published April 23, 2025

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has intensified a diplomatic spat with U.S. lawmakers following their visit to El Salvador to advocate for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national deported from the U.S. despite a federal court order. Bukele’s public mockery of Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) on social media has further strained relations between the two nations.

Background on the Deportation Controversy

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a former Maryland resident, was deported to El Salvador in March 2025 under the Trump administration, despite a Supreme Court order preventing his removal due to concerns over potential persecution by gangs. Upon arrival, he was detained in El Salvador’s maximum-security prison, CECOT, and later transferred to another facility. His current condition and location remain unclear, prompting U.S. lawmakers to demand daily proof of life and his immediate return.

Congressional Delegation Denied Access

In April 2025, a delegation of Democratic lawmakers, including Representatives Maxwell Frost (FL), Robert Garcia (CA), Yassamin Ansari (AZ), and Maxine Dexter (OR), traveled to El Salvador to meet with Abrego Garcia. However, their request was denied by Salvadoran authorities, citing the unofficial nature of their visit. The denial was influenced by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer’s refusal to authorize the trip as an official congressional delegation.

Rep. Frost whined about being denied access to Abrego Garcia on Monday.

“We got word at the embassy that our request has been denied by the government here locally because they say we are not here on official capacity,” Frost said before attacking Comer.

Bukele’s Social Media Mockery

Following the delegation’s denial, President Bukele took to social media to mock Representative Frost. He shared a 2016 tweet from Frost that read, “fuckin wit my gang gon get u spilled,” implying a connection between Frost’s past remarks and his current advocacy. Bukele’s tweet included a facepalm emoji, further ridiculing the situation.

Frost responded defiantly, encouraging critics to continue scrutinizing his past posts, stating, “Keep looking through my old posts. There has to be some more funny stuff in there. Make sure you tag me.”

After Frost was denied a visit with Abrego Garcia, one of his old tweets surfaced.

“fuckin wit my gang gon get u spilled,” Frost tweeted in June 2016.

Maxwell Frost remained defiant in response to criticism over his old tweet.

Cross-Border Controversy

The incident underscores the growing tensions between the U.S. and El Salvador over immigration enforcement and human rights concerns. President Bukele’s administration has been criticized for its authoritarian tendencies, including the suppression of press freedoms and the use of social media to attack opponents.

The U.S. lawmakers’ visit and subsequent denial highlight the complexities of international diplomacy and the challenges of addressing human rights issues in foreign jurisdictions. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how both nations will navigate the delicate balance between sovereignty and the protection of individual rights.
