Either they have let an error slip through, or they have misunderstood the science. Convection does not warm the surface; it cools the surface, i.e., the opposite of their claim. Temperature potential in the atmosphere is dictated by pressure, mass, and gravity. The temperature gradient, the dry lapse rate of about 6.5°C/km (Adiabatic Lapse Rate) is, on average, independent of convection.
