The whereabouts of the young woman who stripped to her underwear at Tehran University, apparently to protest against the country’s strict Islamic dress code, are currently unknown.

Two days ago, she took the Internet by storm with her choice of protest. Visuals from the viral videos showed the woman in her underwear on the campus of Islamic Azad University as others gaped in surprise. Soon after, security guards detained her and took her away.

In a statement on X, university’s spokesperson Amir Mahjob said that the police found that she was “under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder”.

He also claimed that the woman had separated from her partner and was a mother to two children.

However, some social media users suggested the woman’s action was a deliberate protest.

An Iranian student social media channel, Amir Kabir newsletter, reported that the woman stripped to her underwear after members of Basij, a volunteer paramilitary force, harassed her for not following the dress code properly.

A female student stripped to her underwear outside her university in Iran in what some student and rights groups say was a protest against the country’s strict Islamic dress code.

A video circulating on social media and shared by rights group Amnesty International shows the woman sat outside the university in her underwear and with her hair uncovered.

She gestures toward her fellow students, many of whom are female and wearing headscarves, before strolling around the premises.

Another video shows her walking down a road, still in a state of undress, before a group of men surround her, bundle her into a car, and drive away.

Amnesty said Saturday the woman had been “violently arrested” after she protested the “abusive enforcement” of the dress code at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University.

The woman had previously been harassed by members of the Basij, an Iranian volunteer paramilitary group, inside the university’s grounds, according to an Iranian student social media channel, the Amir Kabir newsletter. It claimed members of the force had ripped her headscarf and torn her clothes.

Citing eyewitnesses, state-run Fars news agency reported that the student took off her clothes after two security personnel “calmly talked” to her and warned her about flouting the dress code.

A female Iranian student was arrested on Saturday for removing her clothing in protest after reportedly being assaulted by security forces at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University over improper hijab.

A video showing the student sitting in the courtyard of the university’s Science and Research Branch has gone viral on Iranian social media.

A university official later confirmed her arrest. “Following an indecent act by a student at the Science and Research Branch of the university, campus security intervened and handed the individual over to law enforcement authorities,” Amir Mahjoub, Director General of Public Relations at Islamic Azad University, wrote on X. “The motives and underlying reasons for the student’s actions are currently under investigation.”

On the same day, Amir Kabir Newsletter, a student group on Telegram, reported details of the incident, saying that the student disrobed after being harassed for not wearing a headscarf and having her clothing torn by security forces.

During the student’s arrest, she was subjected to severe physical assault, including her head striking either a car door or a pillar, which caused heavy bleeding. “Blood stains from the student were reportedly seen on the car’s tires,” the report noted.
