The Israeli military stated on Sunday that it carried out a rare ground operation in Syria, seizing a Syrian citizen allegedly involved in Iranian intelligence networks. This marks the first public acknowledgment of Israeli ground forces operating within Syrian territory during the current conflict.
Details of Israeli operation in Syria
The Israeli army reported that the special operation occurred “in recent months” but did not specify an exact date. The military identified the detained individual as Ali Suleiman al-Assi, a resident of southern Syria’s Saida region, claiming he was involved in intelligence-gathering for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The Israeli army stated that al-Assi was transferred to Israel for interrogation.
During an operational activity initiated in the territory of Syria in recent months, the fighters of the Egoz unit with the field investigators of the 504 unit, under the command of the 210 division and with intelligence guidance, arrested an Iranian terrorist infrastructure operative on the Syrian front.
Ali Suleiman al-Assi, a Syrian citizen living in the Tsida region in southern Syria, was employed by Iran and engaged in gathering intelligence on Israeli forces in the border area for future terrorist activity. al-Assi was under close surveillance by Israeli forces, was arrested and is under investigation in Israel
The operation to arrest al-Assi by the Israeli forces prevented and disrupted a future attack and led to the exposure of the method of operation of Iranian entities on the front of the Golan Heights. Ali Suleiman al-Assi was transferred to Unit 504 and the security forces for further investigation.

Israel’s military announced on Sunday (Nov 3) that it has detained a Syrian national allegedly acting as an operative for Iranian intelligence, during an operation that reportedly took place earlier this year.
This is the first time in the current war that Israel has announced sending troops into Syria.
“Iranian terror network operative”
The military said that the man identified as Ali Soleiman al-Assi was an “Iranian terror network operative”, and had been collecting information on Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) movements near the Israeli-Syrian border. This, Israel claims, was tied to an Iranian network orchestrating operations within southern Syria.

Israeli commandos carried out a raid in southern Syria where they captured a Syrian man who was allegedly carrying out surveillance operations on the border on behalf of Iran, the IDF revealed Sunday in a rare acknowledgment of a ground operation in its northeastern neighbor.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the raid in Syria was carried out in recent months by the Egoz commando unit, along with field interrogators of the Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504. Local Syrian media reported that the incident took place on July 19.
The commandos captured Ali Suleiman al-Asi, a Syrian man who lived in the village of Saida, in the Daraa Governorate.
The IDF said that al-Asi worked on behalf of Iran, and was involved in collecting intelligence on the Israeli military’s operations along the Syrian border “for future terror activity.”
The military was “closely monitoring” al-Asi before he was captured and taken to Israel for questioning.
His arrest has “prevented and disrupted a future attack and led to the exposure of the modus operandi of Iranian entities on the Golan Heights front,” the IDF said.
