A federal judge in Maine ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze approximately $3 million in federal funds designated for the state’s child nutrition programs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had previously withheld these funds, citing Maine’s non-compliance with a federal directive to ban transgender girls from participating in girls’ school sports teams. The court’s decision emphasized that the administration failed to follow proper legal procedures before suspending the funds, thereby impacting essential services for vulnerable populations. While the ruling mandates the immediate release of the frozen funds, it does not address the broader legal debate surrounding Title IX and transgender athletes. The case underscores ongoing tensions between federal policies and state decisions on gender identity and educational funding.
Maine is, nevertheless, on the catastrophically wrong side of this issue, and while the Trump administration can place pressure on Maine’s school and university systems, ultimately, it will be up to the Maine voters to set this matter to rights.
And this does need to be set to rights. In February, a “transgender” athlete chalked up another illegitimate win to which he is not entitled.
