KYIV, Ukraine — At least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched a massive, hours-long barrage of missiles and drones against Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, schools and a children’s hospital in one of the capital’s deadliest attacks in recent months.

The assault began shortly after midnight Thursday and continued for hours, with explosions reported across multiple parts of the capital. Ukrainian officials said the attack involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as large numbers of drones.

Children’s hospital among the damaged sites

The attack struck civilian areas of Kyiv, damaging a children’s medical facility along with homes, a school and other infrastructure. The destruction underscored the continuing danger faced by civilians as Russian strikes increasingly combine drones with faster and harder-to-intercept ballistic weapons.

Thousands of residents sought refuge in Kyiv’s subway system during the barrage. The subway has repeatedly served as an emergency shelter during major Russian attacks on the capital.

Ukraine intercepts hundreds of weapons

Ukraine’s air defenses managed to destroy or intercept a large majority of the incoming drones and cruise missiles. However, officials have warned that ballistic missiles remain particularly difficult to stop, especially as Kyiv faces shortages of Patriot air-defense interceptors.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed calls for additional air-defense systems, arguing that stronger protection could save civilian lives.

Russia claims military targets were hit

Moscow has maintained that its forces target Ukrainian military and defense-related facilities rather than civilians. However, the latest barrage caused significant damage in residential areas and at civilian facilities in Kyiv.

The attack came as Ukraine continues carrying out long-range strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure, including oil facilities inside Russia.

Attack raises wider regional concerns

The latest barrage also heightened concerns beyond Ukraine’s borders. Poland and Romania took defensive measures as the broader air war generated risks for neighboring NATO territory, while debris and suspected drones have previously crossed into surrounding countries.

The escalation comes as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain uncertain, with both sides continuing to conduct increasingly sophisticated long-range attacks.

What’s next?

Ukraine’s immediate priority will be rescuing victims, repairing damaged infrastructure and strengthening its air-defense network before another major Russian barrage arrives. The country’s dependence on Western missile-defense systems has become increasingly critical as Russia continues combining large drone waves with ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

For Kyiv residents, the latest attack is another reminder that even after years of war, the capital remains vulnerable to devastating strikes from the air.

💬 Overall Takeaway:

The death toll from the Kyiv barrage is more than a statistic—it represents families who woke up to explosions, parents rushing to protect their children and ordinary Ukrainians once again forced underground to survive the night. Ukraine’s defenses prevented many more weapons from reaching their targets, but the missiles that got through were enough to kill civilians and damage places meant to protect and heal them. The central question now is whether Ukraine’s allies will provide the air-defense capacity Kyiv says it urgently needs before the next barrage arrives.
