It’s the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that Pyongyang had sent between 10,000 and 12,000 soldiers to Russia to help fight in the war.
North Korean troops are suffering heavy losses in fighting in Russia’s Kursk region and facing logistical difficulties as a result of Ukrainian attacks, Ukraine’s military intelligence said Thursday.
The intelligence agency, known under its acronym GUR, said Ukrainian strikes near Novoivanovka inflicted heavy casualties on North Korean units.
It said North Korean troops also faced supply issues and shortages of drinking water.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed and wounded in the fighting in Kursk.
It marked the first significant estimate by Ukraine of North Korean casualties several weeks after Kyiv announced that Pyongyang had sent between 10,000 and 12,000 soldiers to Russia to help fight in the war.
Ukrainian forces launched an incursion into the Kursk region in August, dealing a significant blow to Russia’s prestige and forcing it to deploy some of its troops from eastern Ukraine, where they were pressing a slow-moving offensive.
The Russian army has been able to reclaim some territory in the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces, but has failed to fully dislodge them.
The casualty disclosure came as the Biden administration was pressing to send as much military aid as possible to Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump takes over in January.
In his nightly address on Thursday, Zelenskyy confirmed Washington was increasing military aid to Kyiv but didn’t give a figure.
“It’s very important that the United States is currently increasing supplies. This is necessary to balance the situation. I am grateful to our partners. The pace of supply must become such as to disrupt the pace of Russian assaults. We need greater military strength. And strong positions for diplomacy. Every unit, every brigade that ensures this brings us closer to the possibility of a normal peace,” he said.

TITLE: Ukraine and its allies claim North Korean troops are fighting on the frontline in Russia
Russia is deploying major resources to take back the entire region of Kursk, which Ukraine invaded in early August. Some 1,000 North Koreans have been sent to the area to assist 50,000 Russian soldiers, according to Western intelligence.

More than two months after North Korean troops were sent to Russia, Ukraine and South Korea claim that many Pyongyang soldiers have been killed in the Russian region of Kursk, part of which is still under the control of Kyiv’s forces. Their presence on the frontline was confirmed as early as December 16 by White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby: “We have seen these North Korean soldiers move from the second lines (…) to the front lines on the battlefield meant to be actively engaged in combat operations. It’s not surprising – and of course, it’s also not surprising that now North Korean soldiers are suffering losses on the battlefield.”
The Kremlin is deploying major human and technical resources to recover the entire Kursk region, which was attacked by Ukraine in early August. Some 11,000 North Koreans have been sent to the area to lend a hand to 50,000 Russian soldiers, according to Western intelligence. Experts estimate that around 40% of the 1,300 square kilometers of territory Kyiv claimed control of this summer has been recaptured by the Russian army. Ukraine is seeking to maintain its positions in Russia as part of possible peace.

KYIV, Ukraine — The presence of North Korean soldiers alongside Russian troops in the Russian region of Kursk has not yet had a major impact on the course of the fighting, a Ukrainian military intelligence official told AFP on Tuesday.
According to Kyiv, 12,000 North Korean soldiers, including “about 500 officers and three generals”, are engaged in the border region, which has been partly occupied by Ukrainian forces since August.
Neither Russian nor North Korea has ever confirmed their engagement on the frontlines.
“The involvement of the North Koreans in the fighting has not had a significant impact on the situation. It is not such a significant number of personnel,” Yevgen Yerin, spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR), told AFP.
He said North Korea troops have little experience of modern warfare, particularly with drones, and use tactics that are “primitive, linked, frankly speaking, more to the times of the Second World War.”
“But they are also learning. And we cannot underestimate the enemy. And we can see that they are already taking some things into account in their activities,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been “killed or wounded” so far.
South Korea reported 1,100 killed or wounded on Monday, and said North Korea appears to be preparing to send new units to Russia as reinforcements or to relieve those already fighting, as well as drones.

DIRECT HIT! Ukraine FOUND & BLEW UP Russia’s Main Base with Powerful HIMARS Strike in Kursk
Warning: This video contains animations, infographics and other visual elements to enhance the narrative.
The Ukrainian armed forces are destroying the Russian army’s top forces through offensive operations.
According to figures released by the Ukrainian General Staff, the Russian army has lost more than 780,000 soldiers since the beginning of the war.
These losses include more than 4100 officers and 8 generals.
But the casualty tally for high-level purges was updated once again today.
Ukraine took out a top Russian commander in an attack on the Russian headquarters in the Kursk region.
But how did Ukraine carry out this attack?
HIMARS systems, which were introduced into the Ukrainian army’s inventory by the United States, played an active role in the attack.
Let’s examine together the details of how the burning fire of HIMARS destroyed the Russian headquarters.
GMLRS shells fired from the HIMARS system hit the command center in the city of Lgov in Kursk Oblast.
The headquarters was located in an abandoned civilian building.
The scene was immediately cordoned off by a large number of Russian soldiers.
No one was allowed to approach the command center.
The scale of the destruction at the headquarters was immense and all Russian interventions were inadequate.
As a result of the attack, Salim Peshtov , the deputy commander of the 810th Marine Corps Brigade, who was in the command center, lost his life.
In addition to Peshtov, there were other Russian soldiersin the building, seven of whom were wiped off the battlefield as a result of the attack.
These were probably officers of the brigade, who were in charge of commanding and directing the troops.
What did the Ukrainian authorities say about the attack?
