Early morning chaos unfolded in downtown San Francisco after a man was accidentally dumped into the back of a garbage truck and buried beneath tons of trash, prompting a painstaking rescue that firefighters described as both dangerous and extraordinary.

More than 25 firefighters responded to the scene. Rather than emptying the truck—which could have caused further injury—they carefully removed approximately 30 cubic yards of garbage by hand. The delicate operation lasted nearly two hours as rescuers worked to reach the conscious victim buried beneath layers of debris.
Rescue amid dangerous conditions
Paramedics managed to reach one of the man’s arms through the trash and administered intravenous fluids while he remained trapped, helping reduce the risk of crush syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by prolonged compression injuries.
The man was eventually freed alive and transported to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital with injuries. Authorities have not released his identity, and investigators are still determining whether his injuries resulted from the fall into the truck, being buried beneath the waste, or the compactor mechanism.

Fire officials say they plan to interview the victim once his condition allows in order to understand why he was inside the dumpster. Recology described the incident as an extremely rare event, with similar accidents occurring only infrequently over the years.
