ALEPPO, Syria — A series of powerful explosions tore through an ammunition depot at a Syrian army site near Al-Eis, south of Aleppo, on Monday, September 21, injuring at least four people and sending residents fleeing from nearby areas.
The blasts were heard across surrounding communities, with explosions continuing after the initial detonation. Videos from the area showed flames and a large column of smoke rising from the military facility.
Four People Injured
Syrian authorities reported that at least four people were injured in the incident.
One person was reportedly struck by shrapnel, while others suffered injuries or breathing difficulties as they attempted to escape the area.
Civil-defense teams evacuated nearby residents and closed roads leading toward the ammunition depot. Authorities warned civilians to stay away because unexploded ammunition and continuing detonations could pose additional dangers.
Emergency teams were also deployed to inspect the area and deal with unexploded ordnance following the blasts.
Cause of Explosion Remains Unknown
The Syrian Defense Ministry has launched an investigation into the incident, but authorities have not publicly established what caused the explosion.
The uncertainty has attracted attention because the Aleppo incident is reportedly the fourth similar explosion involving a Syrian weapons or ammunition facility this month.
Other recent explosions have resulted in significantly higher casualties. A September 9 blast at a weapons depot in Idlib province reportedly killed 14 people, while another explosion at a military facility in eastern Syria killed 11 people.
Reuters has reported that numerous explosions at arms-storage facilities have occurred across Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
Authorities have previously attributed some incidents to poor storage conditions, fires and deteriorating ammunition, while the causes of other explosions remain unclear.
Concerns Over Syria’s Military Stockpiles
The latest blast comes as Syria continues reorganizing its military following the collapse of the Assad government.
The country’s new authorities are consolidating weapons and ammunition from different sources, including stockpiles inherited from the former government and weapons previously held by various armed groups.
Experts have raised concerns that aging ammunition, inadequate storage facilities and the rapid restructuring of Syria’s armed forces could increase the risk of accidental explosions.
The country’s long civil war left behind large quantities of weapons and ammunition, much of which may have been stored for years under uncertain conditions.
Sabotage Remains a Question
The repeated explosions have also prompted speculation about possible sabotage or outside interference.
However, there is no publicly established evidence that the Al-Eis explosion was caused by sabotage or a foreign military strike.
Regional tensions remain high, and Israel has previously carried out military operations against targets inside Syria. Nevertheless, available information has not established an Israeli role in the latest incident.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause.
A Growing Security Challenge
The explosion highlights the security challenges facing Syria as its new authorities attempt to consolidate military forces and manage large quantities of weapons accumulated during years of conflict.
For residents living near military facilities, the repeated incidents have raised concerns about ammunition storage and public safety.
The immediate priority remains securing the Al-Eis site, removing unexploded ordnance and preventing further harm to nearby communities.
As investigators work to determine what triggered the latest explosion, questions over Syria’s aging weapons stockpiles and the security of military storage facilities are likely to remain part of the country’s broader postwar challenges.
🧩 Bottom Line:
The Aleppo ammunition-depot explosion highlights the security risks facing Syria as its new authorities manage large and potentially unstable weapons stockpiles left behind by years of war. At least four people were injured, but the cause remains under investigation. While sabotage has been discussed as a possibility, there is currently no confirmed evidence establishing that explanation.
