Witkoff and Rubio: peace process is picking up pace.
| Published April 18, 2025
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian officials in Paris to advance a U.S.-led peace framework aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war. The initiative, endorsed by President Donald Trump, received a positive reception from European leaders and Ukrainian representatives, signaling a potential shift toward diplomatic resolution.
The proposed framework includes a memorandum on a U.S.-Ukraine minerals and reconstruction investment deal, highlighting economic cooperation as a component of the peace process. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the talks as “constructive and positive,” he criticized Witkoff for allegedly promoting Russian narratives, particularly concerning the status of Russian-occupied territories. Despite these tensions, the discussions mark a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts, with further negotiations planned in London.
