On April 23, 2025, a delegation of Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) and Representatives Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Troy Carter (D-LA), and Bennie Thompson (D-MS), visited Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities in Louisiana. The lawmakers expressed deep concern over what they described as the “unlawful” detention and “harrowing conditions” faced by the two activists, both of whom were involved in pro-Palestinian activism on U.S. university campuses.
Mahmoud Khalil, a 30-year-old Columbia University graduate and legal U.S. permanent resident, was arrested by ICE agents in March 2025. His detention followed his participation in campus protests against the Gaza war. Khalil’s arrest has drawn significant attention, especially after reports emerged that he was denied temporary release to attend the birth of his son in New York.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that Khalil “led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,” during his time at Columbia University. DHS officials argue that his actions violated the terms of his residency.
Lawmakers and civil liberties advocates have criticized the detention, arguing that it infringes upon constitutional rights and represents a broader pattern of targeting Muslim and pro-Palestinian activists. Rep. Ayanna Pressley stated, “To Rümeysa, Mahmoud, and everyone who has been harmed by this lawless White House: we see you and we won’t stop fighting for you.”
The visit by Democratic lawmakers underscores the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement practices and the balance between national security and civil liberties. As the situation develops, it continues to spark discussions on the rights of activists and the role of government agencies in addressing political dissent.
