At least 14 people have been killed and another 14 injured after a Russian drone struck a crowded railway platform in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, where passengers were waiting to board trains, Ukrainian officials said.
The attack occurred on Thursday morning, October 29, at Dnipro’s main railway station, striking a platform where a commuter train and a passenger train were standing.
According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, the drone hit the platform as passengers were preparing to travel on a regional train bound for Zaporizhzhia, a city south of Dnipro.
Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed that the death toll had risen to 14. Another 14 people were injured, with six reported to be in serious condition. Among the wounded were an 11-year-old boy.
Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted three jet-powered drones during the daytime attack, but a fourth evaded air defenses and struck the railway station.
Images released by Ukraine’s emergency services showed rescuers carrying injured passengers away from the platform, bodies lying near the railway tracks and two passenger trains severely damaged by the explosion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, describing it as a horrific attack against civilians. He also called on international partners to maintain sanctions against Russia, arguing that easing economic restrictions would not encourage Moscow to reduce its military operations.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilians traveling on trains and waiting at railway stations.
French President Emmanuel Macron also criticized the attack, saying that a limited local ceasefire was insufficient to achieve a lasting end to the war.
Other Russian Attacks Across Ukraine
The Dnipro railway station strike was part of a wider wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine on Thursday.
In the northern city of Chernihiv, a Russian strike killed two 15-year-old girls and wounded more than a dozen people.
In Kremenchuk, a drone struck a multistory residential building, killing three people and injuring dozens, according to regional authorities.
Additional attacks were reported in other Ukrainian locations, including damage to civilian infrastructure and injuries in Zaporizhzhia.
The latest attacks come as Ukraine continues to face intensified Russian drone and missile operations targeting transportation networks, residential areas and critical infrastructure.
Railway Infrastructure Under Increasing Threat
Ukraine’s railway network remains essential for civilian transportation, humanitarian operations and the movement of goods, particularly because commercial air travel has been suspended since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Ukrainian railway authorities have increasingly introduced emergency evacuations and other safety measures as Russian attacks threaten trains and railway facilities.
The Dnipro attack adds to mounting civilian casualties as the war continues, despite renewed diplomatic efforts involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States.
