TEHRAN, Iran — Iran is accusing Qatar of obstructing an investigation into the fate of Iranian pilots who disappeared after their aircraft were shot down during a March attack, escalating a dispute between the two Gulf states over what happened to the missing airmen.
Iranian military official Mohammad Baqerzadeh said Sunday that Qatar had repeatedly delayed efforts by an Iranian fact-finding team to enter the country and investigate the pilots’ fate. He also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in the case.
The accusation comes one day after Qatar rejected Tehran’s claim that it was secretly detaining three Iranian bomber pilots.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said it was surprised by what it described as misleading statements concerning the pilots and maintained that it was not holding any Iranian airmen.
Iran Claims Pilots Were Captured
According to Iranian officials, three pilots disappeared after Iranian aircraft were downed during a March operation involving an attack on Qatar.
Tehran now claims the pilots survived the incident and were captured by Qatar. Iranian officials are demanding information about their whereabouts and are seeking permission for an investigative delegation to enter Qatar.
Baqerzadeh accused Qatari authorities of repeatedly delaying the investigation and preventing the pilots from being returned to Iran.
The allegations represent a significant escalation because Iran had previously described the pilots as missing rather than publicly asserting that Qatar was holding them.
Qatar Rejects Detention Allegations
Doha has firmly rejected Iran’s account.
Qatar says Iranian aircraft violated its airspace during the March incident and failed to respond to attempts by Qatari authorities to establish contact.
According to Qatar, search-and-rescue teams subsequently located the remains of one Iranian pilot. Doha said it contacted Tehran to coordinate the handover of the remains and invited Iranian officials to review information about the search operation.
Qatar says Tehran has not responded to the invitation.
The competing accounts have left the fate of the other Iranian personnel unresolved.
Dispute Centers on March Attack
The incident reportedly involved Iranian Su-24 bombers that were shot down after entering Qatari airspace during the broader Middle East conflict.
Qatar’s Defense Ministry previously said it had shot down two Iranian Su-24 aircraft. Iran later reported that one pilot had been killed and others were missing, according to reporting on the dispute.
Iranian military authorities now say the missing pilots may have been captured rather than killed.
Qatar’s position remains that it has not detained any Iranian pilots.
Tehran Seeks Red Cross Involvement
Iran’s call for the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene signals the seriousness with which Tehran now views the case.
Baqerzadeh urged the organization to investigate the allegations and help establish what happened to the missing airmen.
International involvement could provide a mechanism for verifying competing claims, particularly if the two governments remain unable to agree on access, evidence and the identities of those involved.
Separate Dispute With Kuwait
Iran’s accusations against Qatar came alongside complaints about another Gulf state.
Baqerzadeh also accused Kuwait of withholding information about four Iranians being held there. Iranian officials say the four were members of the Revolutionary Guard and entered Kuwaiti waters because of a navigational error.
Kuwait, however, suspects the men may have been involved in hostile activities. Iran maintains that they were conducting a maritime patrol.
The parallel disputes underscore the broader tensions between Tehran and several Gulf states following months of regional military confrontation.
Gulf Tensions Remain High
Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, a major U.S. military installation and an important hub for American military operations in the Middle East.
The fate of the Iranian pilots therefore carries implications beyond the immediate dispute between Tehran and Doha.
Any confirmation that Iranian personnel survived and were detained could create a new diplomatic confrontation. Conversely, evidence that the missing pilots were killed could undermine Tehran’s claims that Qatar is withholding prisoners.
For now, the two governments remain sharply divided over what happened.
