‘I’ve seen the rhetoric that has come out and the attacks that have been targeted toward immigrants, so I’m very cautious and careful’
Democratic Representative Jahana Hayes of Connecticut has expressed regret over her vote in favor of the Laken Riley Act, a bipartisan immigration enforcement bill recently signed into law by President Donald Trump. The legislation mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with certain crimes, including theft and offenses resulting in serious bodily harm or death.
At a CNN town hall, Hayes explained that her initial support was influenced by a specific provision requiring detention for individuals accused of causing injury or death to law enforcement officers. However, upon further reflection, she stated, “I probably would have voted differently,” citing concerns about due process rights and the broader implications of the bill.
Hayes, representing a competitive district in Connecticut, also voiced apprehension about the administration’s rhetoric on immigration, indicating a more cautious approach to future legislation.
The Laken Riley Act, named after a Georgia college student tragically killed by an undocumented immigrant, has sparked debate over its potential impact on immigrant communities and due process protections.
The law’s proponents have argued that if similar legislation had been signed into law prior to Riley’s murder, her killer, a Venezuelan national, would have been deported upon being arrested for allegedly shoplifting at a Walmart in Athens, Georgia. The migrant murdered Riley nearly two years after the arrest.
