Washington, D.C. – Former President Donald Trump has made waves yet again, this time directing the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into Miles Taylor, the former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official who anonymously penned a critical op-ed and book about the Trump administration.
In an unfiltered moment during a press conference earlier this week, Trump declared, “I think he’s guilty of treason,” referring to Taylor, who in 2018 published an anonymous piece in The New York Times criticizing Trump’s leadership from within the federal government.
Trump, who is once again dominating headlines and legal conversations, didn’t mince words. “He wrote a book under the name Anonymous, trashing me while working inside my administration. He leaked information. That’s not bravery—that’s betrayal.”
“Anonymous” author Miles Taylor may be guilty of treason, Trump claimed.
Who Is Miles Taylor?
Taylor served as Chief of Staff at DHS during Trump’s presidency. Though relatively unknown to the public at the time, he became infamous after admitting in 2020 that he was the author behind the anonymous 2018 op-ed titled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration.” In the piece, Taylor claimed that many senior officials were quietly working to “thwart parts of [Trump’s] agenda and his worst inclinations.”
In 2019, Taylor left the administration and later published a book, A Warning, under the same anonymous identity. He eventually revealed himself as the author during the 2020 presidential election cycle and publicly endorsed Joe Biden.
Trump’s Accusation: Treason or Free Speech?
While the op-ed and the book drew fierce criticism from Trump allies and even some mainstream media pundits, Trump’s recent demand for a DOJ investigation marks a dramatic escalation.
“This wasn’t just disloyalty. It was subversion from within,” Trump said. “He jeopardized national security. We’re going to find out exactly what he leaked and who helped him.”
However, legal scholars note that accusations of “treason” are extremely serious and require a high threshold to prosecute under U.S. law. Taylor, for his part, has responded on social media, calling Trump’s remarks “desperate” and “an attack on dissent.”
“Dissent is not treason. If speaking out against corruption and dysfunction makes you a traitor, then our founding fathers would be traitors too,” Taylor wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Trump said he believes Miles Taylor is guilty of treason.
“The central memorandum we have for you relates to Miles Taylor. You may recall that Miles Taylor served in the Department of Homeland Security during your previous administration. In his capacity with the Department of Homeland Security, he leaked classified information,” Will Scharf said in the Oval Office.
“He wrote a book under the pseudonym “Anonymous,” making outrageous claims both about your administration and about others in it. What this presidential memorandum is going to do, one, it’s going to strip any act of clearance that he has in light of his past activities involving classified information, it’s also going to order the Department of Justice to investigate his activities to see what else might come up in that context, given his egregious behavior during your previous administration,” Will Scharf said.

A Political Flashpoint
The investigation order comes at a time when Trump is increasing his influence over Republican politics and floating bold plans should he return to the White House. Critics argue this move is part of a broader campaign to punish those he views as enemies. Others believe it’s a necessary step to hold former officials accountable.
Conservative commentators are split—some rallying behind Trump’s call for justice, while others warn this could be seen as political retribution, reminiscent of banana republic tactics.
Former CISA director Christopher Krebs will have “a big price to pay” if he was wrong about the 2020 election being secure, Trump said.AP
What’s Next?
The Department of Justice has not yet confirmed whether it will open a formal investigation into Taylor. Legal experts expect a storm of lawsuits and free speech debates in the coming weeks.
For now, the move has already reignited debates about the limits of whistleblowing, the power of former presidents, and the definition of loyalty in the halls of government.
One thing is clear: Trump isn’t finished shaking Washington.
